Telus Storyhive | A Gentleman

Based on the true accounts of sexual assault survivors, and Brock’s wife’s personal experiences, the feature film “A Gentleman” follows high school basketball player Tom Irvin during the final games of his season. Tom is faced with an encounter of sexual misconduct with someone he trusted that leaves him struggling to find support and regain his self-identity.

The mission of this narrative film was to empower those who have been abused or been witness to abuse, to speak up and find support. Community partnerships were made throughout the film making process with distress lines and forums so that this film could offer a call to action for those who felt that they had to remain silent.

Telus Originals | Piita Aapasskaan

Kyle Young Pine was raised distanced from his family’s Blackfoot customs and traditions. Skateboarding saved him from the generational traumas he faced as a child, but it was in Fancy Feather Dancing where he found his truest self.

Having grown up skateboarding with Kyle in Okotoks Alberta, Brock hoped to capture Kyle’s progression in Fancy Feather Dancing, and how it corresponded with his skateboarding. What came from the documentary film “Piita Aapasskaan” was a deeper connection and more meaningful story about Kyle’s recovery journey through addiction and personal growth.

Reuben and the Dark | Bow and Arrow

The narrative music video for Reuben and the Dark follows the story of a young boy and his father as they try to cope with the loss of a loved one.

Their inability to express their feelings as men reaches a breaking point of anger and frustration, further leading to the dissolution of their family connection.

Using visual metaphor to communicate themes of grief, forgiveness, and healing.

Lisa Cuthill | Love & Other Catastrophes

Separated by a century, two women are faced with similar struggles within societal expectations and love.

One living with her abusive husband in the late 1800’s, the other confined within the ‘male gaze’ of the modern era. Both of which are trying to navigate their self identity as women through this emotional manipulation, objectification, and misogyny that parallels these two periods in time.

Love & Other Catastrophes is a music video montage between these two stories, illustrating the lack of progression in societal views of women throughout history.

Children’s Wish Foundation | One Wish

This series of short form documentaries for the Children’s Wish Foundation told the stories of four families, and the wish that their child had been granted. The purpose of the series was to focus on whimsy and triumph in their child’s life in the midst of adversity and heartbreak. Dealing with delicate subject matter, it was important to inform the audience of what these families had been through in order to give context, but the intention was to distance the stories from getting lost in sorrow. Each individual production created an environment for the kids to experience something new and exciting much like their wishes that were granted by the Children’s Wish Foundation. Empowering them to tell their own stories, while reminding us all that they are not defined by their illnesses.
